Safety City Registration Now Open For Incoming Kindergartners
Maumee Safety City: Preparing Incoming Kindergartners for the Road Ahead
The Maumee Police Division, in collaboration with the Maumee Board of Education and the Maumee Rotary Club, is officially inviting local families to participate in this year’s Safety City. This long-standing community staple is designed to introduce the city’s youngest residents to critical safety practices before they start grade school.
Eligibility and New Enrollment Rules
For 2026, the program is open to any child entering kindergarten in the fall. Due to recent changes in Ohio law (House Bill 114), a child must be five years old by the first day of school to be eligible for kindergarten enrollment. For Maumee City Schools, the eligibility cutoff for resident children is August 19, 2026, which marks the first day of instruction.
Program Highlights
Safety City offers a comprehensive, hands-on learning environment where 4- and 5-year-olds explore essential safety topics they might not encounter otherwise.
- School Bus Safety: Children learn how to interact with drivers, understand bus signals, and practice safe loading, unloading, and seating.
- Community Partnership: The program features various local community providers to educate children on the safest community practices.
- Session Structure: There are two week-long sessions available to choose from: June 1st-5th, 2026 and June 8-12th, 2026, with graduation ceremonies on the Friday at the end of each session.
Registration and Costs
While the program primarily serves Maumee residents and students attending Maumee Schools, neighboring residents may be accepted if space permits.
- Registration Form: Parents can download the 2026 registration documents directly from the official City of Maumee website.
- Cost: The fee is $30.00 for residents or children attending Maumee City School District and $40.00 for non-residents.
- Deadline: Registration closes on May 22, but spots fill quickly; families are encouraged to submit forms to the Maumee Police Division early.
Parents of incoming students should also mark their calendars for the Kindergarten Parent Informational Meeting on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the Maumee High School Performing Arts Center.
