Special Mayoral Edition: John and Julie Sit Down With Maumee Mayor Chelsea Ziss to Talk About Storage Tanks, a Proposed Sewer Building, Water Meters, and Republic Waste

In this Meet Me In Maumee segment, Mayor Ziss discusses several critical city infrastructure and planning initiatives:
Land Purchase & Holding Tanks: The city recently purchased a large parcel of land for approximately $2.5 million—a significant reduction from a previous valuation of $27–$28 million.

Purpose: The primary reason for the purchase is to provide a location for potential sewer holding tanks required by the EPA to manage inflow and infiltration.
Location: The site is situated near the turnpike, intentionally far from residential and business areas to minimize the impact of potential odors.
Future Development: If the tanks are ultimately not needed, the land can be used for community development, such as parks, housing, or manufacturing facilities to stabilize the city’s tax base
Water Department Upgrades: The city’s water department is installing new meters, a move intended to address historical issues with failing meters and inaccurate billing.
Regulatory Compliance: The city is working under a consent decree approved in late 2025, which outlines a timeline—potentially up to 20 years—to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows
