Serving Up Warmth and Connection at Brew House
I found the perfect way to spend an afternoon in Uptown Maumee.
By Sarah Mokri

It was a warm, damp early spring afternoon when I wandered into Brew House Coffee & Bake Shop in Uptown Maumee. The front entrance consists of a door leading to an upstairs apartment and a separate door to the coffee shop itself. On this day, however, I used the back entrance via the sidewalk adjacent to the East Mews. The aroma of roasted coffee greeted me before I even reached the small patio. Crossing the threshold, I passed through my favorite area in the shop: a snug back room furnished with a table, a loveseat, and a cozy electric stove.

Built in 1887, the row-style building is eclectic and charming, featuring exposed brick walls and a stamped, coppery-tin ceiling. An assortment of couches, wooden dining tables, and cushioned chairs provide plenty of comfortable seating, while an upright piano and wrought-iron accessories hint at the space’s jazzy undertones.

Brew House has an extensive menu of traditional hot or iced lattes, chais, and espressos, alongside Aeropress, French Press, and Nitro Cold Brew options. For non-coffee drinkers, they offer smoothies, lemonades, teas, and hot chocolate. Erin, who owns the shop with her husband Nathan, is famous for her cheesecakes; flavors on my visit ranged from blueberry and lemon to keto-friendly options. They’re made in-house and available by the slice, or they can be pre-ordered whole for special occasions. For breakfast, guests can choose a ham, egg, and provolone sandwich, fruit cups, parfaits, or oatmeal with various toppings. The lunch menu features several types of sandwiches, flatbreads, soups, salads, and small snack plates, such as fruit and cheese or crostini.
It was difficult to choose, but I eventually landed on a frozen blended coffee with sugar-free brown sugar cinnamon flavoring—the perfect complement to my freshly baked blackberry brown sugar oat scone. The coffee was creamy and smooth without being overly sweet, and the scone was moist and flavorful, finished with a perfect drizzle of icing.

I sat in the cafe for quite a while, writing and watching people stop in for a respite from their busy lives. Van Morrison’s “Stranded” played in the background, mingling with the sound of the milk steamer and the pleasant chatter of patrons. Whether you’re there to rest, work quietly, or connect with friends, it is a perfectly cozy, homey space. Throughout my stay, the baristas were consistently sweet, and the clientele ranged from students and colleagues to older couples and solo customers. Everyone was made to feel welcome. The modern-day proverb, “Good coffee is a pleasure. Good friends are a treasure,” has never held more truth than it does here at Brew House Coffee & Bake Shop.

Brew House is open from 7:30 AM-6:00 PM Monday-Friday and from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM on the weekends.
